Jacqueline Acheampong is known professionally as Gyakie. Born and bred in Ghana, in the Ashanti Region. Gyakie originally hails from Abuakwa.
22-year-old Gyakie is the daughter of the legendary Ghanaian highlife star, Nana Acheampong. Her love for music started when she was 8 years, growing up she would follow her father to the studio and also sometimes travelled with him to his live concerts.‘’ Even though I grew up escorting my dad to the studio, and also singing in the church choir, I never saw myself doing music until I entered college’’ she mentioned to GQ.
Gyakie now is holding on to her family’s legacy by becoming a fast trailblazer in Ghana, with contemporary music. In 2019 Gyakie released her first single “Love Is Pretty’’ which wasn’t much of a hit but with consistency and perseverance, this sweet-voiced singer came back in August 2020 with the release of her maiden EP “Seed, with her hit song “Forever”. Listening to “Forever” is difficult for the listener not to put the song on replay. It is no surprise the song has transcended from the shores of Ghana and is receiving more airplay.
A year ago, when the world was in a global pandemic, she came out with “Forever”. Gyakie said “This song means a lot to me, it was written at the corner of my dark bedroom during this whole lockdown period in Ghana. I threw my thoughts ahead of time into how I would want my future love life should. I wrote about what I see and I want to experience and that was it, a lot of people connected with the song especially the times that we all find ourselves in”.
Gyakie’s smash hit “Forever” charted not only in Ghana but Nigeria, Kenya, and parts of The Caribbean. The single also made Billboard’s Top Triller Global and ranked on Shazam’s Top 200 chart.
To keep the momentum Gyakie wowed her fans by releasing a remix to the hit song, with Nigerian star Omah Lay, followed by a banging video. In less than a week, she has received 3 million views on her first video for Forever on Youtube and 1.2 million for the remix respectively. Gyakie is utilising the power of social media to reach out to new audiences across the globe, especially in a time like this when travelling is very limited. She keeps creating music with her artistic inspiration.
“I look forward to exploring my sound further, with my talent in a way that it will still keep my fans intrigued by what will come next’’.Gyakie is indeed poised for the world big time, as her feet are firmly on the ground. After the release of the ‘’Forever’’ remix, her team Flip The Music, landed an International record label deal with Sony Music West Africa as the home with Sony Music East and South Africa respectively.
Gyakie has performed at the Rapperholic Concert, Tidal Rave and featured on Red Bull South Africa, and also a guest on BBC’s Focus on Africa. “I miss doing shows, even though I haven’t made any announcements yet concerning shows because of the pandemic at the moment. That doesn’t stop my management and me from making plans either. There’s always a contingency plan and that’s what we work with.’’ On education, this young star is such a pro at what she does, she is in her 3rd year, studying International Business at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology in Kumasi- Ghana.
“Juggling school work and music is such a struggle sometimes. There are days I decide to choose between a studio session or going for lectures. There have been times where I have an exam a day after I play a show in another city and I have to travel back with a focused mind to study for an examination. I’m in my final year, so I will finish pretty soon -I believe one, in the end, you just need to be disciplined and know where you want to get to in life’’.
With the power of social media, Gyakie has pushed her music to several audiences and to grow her fanbase. Working with the likes of E.L, Kuvie et al Gyakie in 2020 recruited Bisa Kdei on her single “Sor Mi Mu” which has become a hit since then. Gyakie acknowledges key people in the music industry she looks up to Nigerian female songwriter Asa, Omar Sterling a rapper from the Ghanaian group, R2bees and Efya. “I want to have a memorable, unforgettable and lifetime legacy’’ she concluded.
